Mahindra BE 6e Review: Bold Looks, Amazing Surprises

The BE 6e looks like a UFO on the road and is basically a concept car put up for sale.

A few years ago we saw the Concept BE which Mahindra said would go into production with almost no changes. However, it was hard to believe because most of the times, concept cars look very changed when they hit the showrooms. That is not the case with the BE 6e as it looks like a UFO on the road and is basically a concept car that has been put up for sale.

The BE 6e is characterised by its unique styling and on the road it stops traffic with its tremendous road presence. It is 4.3 metres in length but has a riot of cuts and curves. The front-end has unique lights with glossy black detailing that contrast well. Then there are the aero efficient wheels, flush door handles at the front and the tapered roof line that drops down sharply as well as the air duct through the bonnet- similar to sports cars! It is all about flashy details and looking different from anything else while the bright colours make it stand out even more.

The interior is even more luxurious, including pull straps for the door handles which again is something different. However, the big highlight is the cabin design and the way it wraps around you. It has twin screens while the centre console divides the cabin. The quality is the best we have seen from Mahindra while everything from the fabric upholstery to the materials used or even the design feels expensive.

The steering wheel looks like an aircraft and the switches above are also like an aircraft style gear lever which takes a little getting used to. The twin screens are of high resolution while the digital driver display has high customisation through the steering wheel like a gaming console. The feature list is huge with a panoramic sunroof with multi-colour ambient lighting that lights up the roof at night!

Other features include a beautiful 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with Dolby Atmos, a head up display that can be customised, a selfie camera where you can make video calls, in-built apps, 360 degree camera, dual zone climate control, powered driver seat with memory, in-built Wi-Fi with 5g, 7 airbags, ADAS level 2 etc! The seats look like they belong to a fighter jet cockpit and you can also plug in an external device at the back to stream content!

The space in the front seat is good but the rear seat feels a bit small due to the high window line, also the headroom is a bit limited for tall people but the legroom is okay while there is no headrest in the middle. The boot is 455 litres with a powered tailgate and that is okay but the 45 litre frunk is useful too.

It is also fun to drive with this steering, it feels like you are piloting a plane! It feels compact on the move, nimble and compact while still offering plenty of power. There are three drive modes, with the sportiest mode being the one that can be selected on empty roads, but you have to be careful with how quickly it gets up to speed! The 79kwh battery pack version puts out 280 horsepower, it feels very nimble and is a lot of fun to drive around with such great performance on a 4.3 metre car. However, one problem we noticed is that the gear selector was slow, but we hope that will be fixed in the final production cars.

It also feels nimble while the ride is a little harsh but the handling is fine too. It feels fun, powerful and still controls its power while it is easily the fastest EV in its segment. The range is around 680ish but in the real world you can expect 500-550km. Overall, the BE 6E left us more than impressed and for the expected price, it offers a lot. The looks are attractive and so is the tech-packed interior, but it is also fast. This is one EV that can appeal to ICE car buyers as well.

What we like: Looks, performance, range, features, interior, price

What we didn't like: Slow gear selector, rear seat space
