The celebration of Constitution Day was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, on the occasion of 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. It aims to raise awareness of constitutional values among citizens.


What's its history?

After the formation of independent India, the Constituent Assembly entrusted the task of drafting the Constitution to a committee headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was the President of the Constituent Assembly, which was established in 1946.

In 1948, Dr. Ambedkar prepared the draft of the Indian Constitution and presented it in the Constituent Assembly. The draft was adopted on November 26, 1949, with very few amendments. The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.

It took nearly three years for the Constituent Assembly to complete the momentous and most historic task of drafting the Constitution for independent India. The Indian Constitution is the largest written constitution in the world with 1,17,360 words (in English version).


Significance

Indian Constitution Day raises awareness about constitutional ideals, rights and commitments, emphasizing justice, liberty, equality and fraternity and promoting national unity.
